The ‘Pride Whopper’ was announced on Instagram by Burger King’s Austrian division on June 1st. The burger features either two sesame seed top buns or two bottom buns rather than one of each in light of Pride month.
Many of the LGBTQ+ community members were outraged and believed the restaurant’s pride campaign was referencing sex within the community. Mainly, they interpreted it as choosing if you are a “bottom” or a “top” which is a misinformed concept.
The German agency that created the campaign with Burger King Austria admitted they didn’t look into possible different interpretations of the Pride Whopper.
The agency posted on LinkedIn, “The intended message of the Pride Whopper was to spread equal love and equal rights… Our strongest concern is if we offended members of the LGBTQ Community with this campaign. If this is the case, we truly apologize.”
The “Pride Whopper” campaign photo is still a current post on Burger King Austria’s Instagram.
