On Wednesday, a former judge, in Brooklyn, New York, was given 15 months in prison after being convicted of obstruction of justice.
The ex- Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice, Sylvia Ash, was accused of trying to mislead federal investigators who were investigating embezzlement at the Municipal Credit Union.
Ash used to serve as the chair of the Board of Directors at MCU. This is a credit union that caters to New York City civil servants, like firefighters, sanitation employees, and law enforcement officers.
She assisted the ex-CEO of the MCU, Kam Wong, in embezzling millions of dollars from the credit union. She helped by signing a false memo that showed that he was authorized to receive the funds.
U.S. Judge Lewis Kaplan gave Ash her sentence. He stated that Ash had thrown her whole career, reputation, and her status in the community away.
Eli Mark, a U.S. attorney, said that Ash used her position as a judge to get away with her wrongdoings.
“I was blessed with life beyond my imagination. That is all gone now…it’s destroyed. I have no one to blame but myself,” Ash stated.
Ash resigned from the bench in early April.
