Family Files Lawsuit After Inmate’s Heart Was Missing When His Body Was Released To Them

1.5kviews

A family has filed a lawsuit against the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) after they say that the body of their son, who died at Ventress prison in Birmingham, Alabama, had a heart missing and was decomposing.

43-year-old Brandon Dotson died on Nov. 16, at the prison, on the same day that he was up for parole, the lawsuit notes.

After trying for multiple days to retrieve Dotson’s body from the ADOC, on Nov. 21, the family had finally received his body. But, the family says that Dotson’s body was extremely decomposed by then. After talking with an autopsy pathologist to look over Dotson’s body, the family learned that his heart was missing.

The lawsuit states that the ADOC or an agency responsible for performing the autopsy or carrying the body to his relatives had taken out and kept Dotson’s heart without required permission.

Dotson’s family is now requesting that his heart be given back to them, and they want answers as to what happened to him.
