A man in Philadelphia was taken to jail for shoplifting and was expected to be held only briefly.

Last March, 35-year-old Armani Faison had been placed in Philly’s Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility. A new cellmate, Kevin Massey, was put in the cell with him.

Massey had previously been accused of attempting to rape another cellmate. However, he was still placed in the same cell as Faison who was only apprehended for a minor crime.

Hours later, Massey attacked Faison as he cried out for help, unsuccessfully. Massey pulled the sprinkler system in the cell and flooded it.

Armani was eventually found the next morning naked, covered in blood, and floating in six inches of water. He had injuries throughout his body, including rectal hemorrhaging. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Faison’s relatives have now filed a lawsuit against the city and multiple guards. They claim that one guard should be held accountable for placing Massey in Faison’s cell. They also feel that another guard is responsible for leaving his post and not monitoring the cellmates.

Massey was charged with rape and murder.
