A jury awarded over $20 million in a civil lawsuit to the family of a teen that was shot and killed by a former Balch Springs officer.

On Monday, in a Dallas Federal Courtroom, a jury reached a verdict and awarded Jordan Edwards family with $21.6 million in damages. Of that money Jordan’s father, Odell Edwards, was awarded over $8 million.

Over $2 million was awarded to Jordan Edwards estate and $11 million in punitive damages.

In 2017 Balch Springs officers responded to a disturbance call, in which former officer Roy Oliver shot into a vehicle that was leaving and Edwards was a passenger in.

The bullet struck and killed Edwards.

In 2018, Oliver was convicted of murder and sentenced to 15 years in prison, which he is currently serving.

Last week during the civil trial jurors listened to testimony from both Odell Edwards and Oliver before reaching their verdict.
