A former North Carolina police chief was arrested in South Carolina after faking his own death to avoid criminal charges.
William Anthony Spivey,36 a former Chadbourn police chief was arrested Thursday morning at his aunts apartment.
He was reported missing on February 21 after he didn’t return home from a fishing trip on the Lumber River in Columbus County.
Local and state authorities quickly began an extensive search that included divers to search the water.
Meanwhile, investigators were doing their own investigating which led them to believe that Spivey’s disappearance was staged.
After a few tips officers located Spivey at an apartment complex. He was found in a wooded area behind the apartments and arrested.
He is being held on a $1 million bond.
