Man Who Wounded 14 People With A Machete At An Elementary School Dies In Prison Over Two Decades Later
78-year-old William Stankewicz, a man who had been imprisoned since 2001 for attacking educators and students with a machete, at an elementary school in Pennsylvania, died in prison on Monday.
Stankewicz was discovered unconscious in his cell at the State Correctional Institution at Dallas. His cause of death hasn’t been released and is being investigated.
Stankewicz had been sentenced to 132-to 264-years in prison for the incident that occurred at North Hopwell-Winterstown Elementary school, close to York. Those that were hurt include 11 kindergarten students.
Norina Bentzel, the principal, had suffered the most injuries, having extensive lacerations and a broken arm that happened when she was helping to tackle Stankewicz to the floor.
Stankewicz later admitted that he carried out the attack because he was upset about his divorce to his Russian-born wife. She had also accused him of molesting her daughters. He added that he targeted the school because he couldn’t locate his former wife’s residence.
Prior to the attack, Stankewicz had threatened the lives of his former wife and her daughters. Because his attempts to get her deported weren’t successful, he also threatened immigration officials and a Pennsylvania congressman. He had been sentenced to two years in federal prison for those threats.
