In August, five children died in an apartment fire in East St. Louis, Illinois.

They were identified as Loy-el, 2 and twins Heaven and Neveah Dunigan, 8; Jabari Johnson 4, and Deontae Davis, 9.

On Wednesday, the mother, 34 year-old Sabrina Dunigan, was charged with five counts of endangering the life or health of a child.

Dunigan allegedly left her children unattended at home at 3 o’clock in the morning, on her 34th birthday. She said she went to pickup her boyfriend from work. When she returned, her residence was up in flames. She then tried to retrieve her kids but was unsuccessful.

Dunigan’s father, Greg Dunigan, said that he and his wife, who reside in the same building, were supposed to look after the children. However, they fell asleep, eventually leaping from the second floor to safety.

The cause of the fire remains unclear.

Dunigan’s bail has been set at $75,000. As of Friday, she wasn’t in custody.
