On Sunday, December 26, a police officer fatally shot a man who was trying to kill his own father, authorities with the Buckeye Police Department in Arizona stated.

Close to 3 p.m., an officer arrived to a location after multiple calls were made, reporting gunshots. He then witnessed two men fighting on a sidewalk.

As the father was on the ground bleeding, his son was kneeling over him with a knife. When the officer demanded that the son release the knife, the man refused. He was then shot by the policeman.

The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. His father was transported to the hospital with gunshot injuries and is in stable condition.

Both the gun and the knife were discovered on the sidewalk.

The officer that was involved in the shooting, a two-year veteran, used his patrol rife and has been placed on leave.

The motive of the fight is ongoing, and an investigation continues.
