A grocery store run by students for students has opened inside of a Fort Worth School. The goal is to provide students with life skills and to assist families in need.
After a grant was provided by Texas Health Resources, the Thrive Market opened on Wednesday at O.D. Wyatt High School.
Many students will be working inside of the store. At the same time, many more students will have an opportunity to shop there at no cost.
The student workers have been trained in food handling and civil rights. They have also obtained certificates to be able to operate the store. Their jobs will be to run inventory, fill shelves, check people out, and other duties.
The school district’s goal is to let students use their skills they are acquiring in real-world situations that will get them ready for life outside of high school.
There are over 90% of students at O.D. Wyatt that are said to be economically disadvantage.
Thus, certain students will be provided with a specific dollar amount in order to purchase groceries to take to to their residence for their families.
Texas Health Resources is now raising money to put groceries stores on other school campuses where there is food scarcity or health challenges.
