19-year-old Jack Sweeney refused to close down his Twitter account after Elon Musk said he would pay him $5,000 to stop tracking his private jet. Musk has now blocked Sweeney from his social media accounts.
“I’ve done alot of work on this and 5k is not enough,” Sweeney stated. He added that $5,000 wasn’t enough to replace “the fun I have in this, working on it.”
Now, Sweeney desires to make a profit by tracking other famous billionaires like Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos. He has started his own company, Ground Control, that tracks the flight activity of other high-interest aircrafts.
Furthermore, firms like Nasdaq Data Link have started offering private and corporate aviation intelligence to those who want to get the upper hand on important business information.
“Companies in flight tracking have millions in revenue per year. Just a small cut of what they make would be good revenue for me,” stated Sweeney.
The main problem is that Sweeney’s type of company may have privacy and legal issues. In 2021 for example, one alternative data provider faced charges from the Securities and Exchange Commission.
