On Sunday, March 6, a popular Iraqi content creator on TikTok was fatally shot.
20, referred to as Maria, was always going against social norms. She would do things like take pictures in midriff clothes and smoke.
Now, Eman’s 17-year-old brother is accused of shooting her eight or nine times and has been arrested. He is said to have killed her on the street near an airport. After he was arrested, someone else was apprehended, too, for assisting him in hiding.
Even though it hasn’t been officially confirmed, the woman’s death is thought to be a result of an “honor killing.” A killing of this kind usually happens when a family member, normally a female, is viciously killed for bringing shame on her relatives.
Eman was known for posting pictures and videos to social media that depicted her often violating Iraqi Kurdish society’s values and Islamic guidelines.
Last August, Eman posted a message on Facebook. “I believe that humans will always suffer at the hands of other humans,” she wrote.
Eman was killed on International Women’s Day.
