Chris Spear, President and CEO of the American Trucking Association, said that the trucking industry is in need of 80,000 drivers.
Prior to the pandemic, the industry was already short over 61,000 drivers.
Spear stated that the shortage is due to retirement, going to another industry, and a rise in buyer demand.
Now, US ports are backlogged and supply chains are slowing down. President Biden has even issued an order for two ports in California to run 24/7. However, it is impossible without the workforce to do so.
About 71% of US economic goods are moved by truck drivers. If the issue isn’t fixed soon, 160,000 drivers will be needed by 2030, and 1,000,000 new drivers will be needed in the next 10 years.
There is a current bill being discussed by congress. This would put billions of dollars back into the industry and permit 3,000 drivers between the ages of 18-20 to get training and hit the road. As of now, drivers have to be 21.
