Deanna Stinson, a 50-year-old from Tampa, Florida, has pleaded guilty to a murder-for-hire plot. She planned to pay for the killing with Bitcoin.
Stinson is now facing 10 years in federal prison, pleading to soliciting a crime of violence and murder-for-hire.
Her sentencing date is pending.
Stinson is accused of trying to hire a hitman over the Dark Web to kill her former boyfriend’s spouse. She paid over $12,000 in a Bitcoin-for-blood scheme to an unidentified website.
Authorities say that Stinson submitted an order in June that included the victim’s name, address, and picture. She also attached a note that read, “Do not do at home. Any place else is fine. Need completed during July…”
In an additional note, she added that a bonus would be available if the job was done by July 31.
When that date came around, she requested that the site administrators find someone else who would make sure things were handled. She wanted it done “ASAP.”
Detectives investigated the digital trail that showed Stinson’s payment. Then, an undercover agent got in touch with her through Whatsapp, posing as a hitman.
After officers looked through her home, they took three computers and an iPhone. There, they found the Bitcoin payments, contacts with the undercover officer, and more evidence.
