A new study conducted by Environment Texas concluded that 55 out of 61 beaches in Texas contained unsafe levels of fecal bacteria.
The fecal bacteria is known to be caused by sewage overflows. Swimming in contaminated water runs the risk of respiratory issues, stomach illness, ear and eye infections, and rashes.
Eight beaches, two of which which are in Galveston, exceeded the EPA’s safety standards for fecal bacteria every day that it was tested, by more than 25%.
Corpus Christi, however, has the beach with the most frequently contaminated in the entire state.
All 19 of the beaches that were tested in Louisiana came back positive for unsafe levels of fecal bacteria at some point during the testing.
