A police officer in Arlington shot and killed a man during a traffic stop on Interstate 20, Thursday afternoon, at about 1:45 p.m.

Authorities say that a motorcycle officer was on duty when he pulled a man over after witnessing him driving recklessly. As the two were talking, the officer requested that the man turn off his vehicle.

The driver wouldn’t turn it off but got out. That’s when the officer saw that he was holding a gun. Police say that the officer instructed the man to put down his gun, and when he refused, the officer fired his gun multiple times, hitting the man at least once.

The driver was transported to a medical facility where he died.

Once his relatives are notified of his death, the identity of the driver will be publicized by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The officer involved wasn’t wounded, but it isn’t known if the driver shot his weapon.

An internal investigation has now begun to determine if the officer abided by department guidelines. Another investigation is also underway by homicide investigators who will review the shooting.

The officer’s identity hasn’t been released as of yet. He is on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigations.
