Father and Stepson Die at Big Bend National Park After Hiking in 119 Degree Temperatures
A father and his 14-year-old stepson both died at Big Bend National Park just before the start of the weekend.
The 31-year-old man and his two stepsons, ages 21 and 14, were walking along the Marufo Vega Trail on Friday evening.
With temperatures reaching 119 degrees, the Florida family was facing extreme heat conditions. According to the National Park Service, the 14-year-old fell ill and became unconscious.
The father then went to retrieve their vehicle and get help while the 21-year-old stayed with his younger brother and attempted to carry him back to the car.
Park Rangers and U.S. Border Patrol Agents were notified of the situation and arrived at the scene around 7:30 p.m. Shortly after their arrival, officials located the 14-year-boy’s deceased body on the trail.
At around 8 p.m., the father was located inside the vehicle, crashed along the embankment at the Boquillas Overlook. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The incident remains under investigation.
