A California mortician allegedly let 11 bodies rot at a funeral home, officials in Los Angeles said Friday.
The owner of the funeral home, Mark Allen, was charged with 22 misdemeanor counts of failing to properly bury human remains.
According to the statement, un-buried, non-cremated remains “were found in various stages of decay and mummification” twice over the last year.
In April 2021 a petition was filed by the state Cemetery and Funeral Bureau to suspend Allen’s license.
The petition states that bodies were found stored in a non-permitted cold storage unit that was kept at 60 degrees. There were flies buzzing around the exhaust vent to unit and there was a foul and strong smell of decomposition.
Eleven bodies, including those of young children, were found to be mistreated by Allen and not preserved properly.
He was arrested after a year of investigation and faces up to 11 years in jail $110,000 in fines.
