Governor Greg Abbott Renews Disaster Declaration, Putting Dallas’ Eviction Ordinance Back In Place

Dallas’ own eviction ordinance was extended over the weekend, following the Governor’s renewal of the disaster declaration.

The Dallas Eviction Ordinance is tied directly to Governor Greg Abbott’s COVID-19 Disaster Declaration. Abbott renewed that declaration yet again Saturday, for another 30 days.

The ordinance gives tenants 21 days to respond to a Notice of Possible Eviction and apply for rental assistance in order to pay their landlord.

Officials say it was expected because it means the state will receive funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Dallas Councilmembers, however, debated whether to keep or discontinue the ordinance. Many of them argued that the county still has $15 million in rental assistance.
