On Wednesday afternoon, a man fatally shot his mother in Joliet, Illinois. He has now been taken into custody after turning himself in.

21-year-old Justin Holman is being held in the Will County Adult Detention Center and has been charged with first-degree murder.

Just prior to 1 p.m., in the 1500 block of North Larkin Ave., officers arrived to the scene after getting a call from Holman who wanted to surrender to police for a crime he had committed.

He then disclosed to police that he had killed someone at his home on Langsford Lane. He was then taken in for questioning.

When officers went to do a welfare check at the home on Langsford, they discovered  48-year-old Bernadette Quasie unconscious, suffering from  gunshot injuries. Eventually the victim, Holman’s mother, was declared deceased.

Holman told police that he and his mother had gotten into a disagreement about three days prior to the shooting. This was because he hadn’t signed a life insurance policy. He added that his parents had created a $1 to $2 million life insurance policy for him. But, he became suspicious that they wanted the policy because he was unemployed, didn’t have kids or a social life.

Holman ultimately stated that he was scared for his life and utilized a firearm that was in his vehicle. He said that he thought about killing himself after shooting his mother.

While talking to police, Holman told them that he had consumed 12 Alprazolam on Dec. 19 and Dec. 20. They hadn’t been prescribed to him, though.

Relatives told police that Quasie was planning to evict her son because he didn’t want to work or pay bills. It was also noted that the mother had life insurance policies on all of her children, but Holman didn’t like his. He had disclosed to his mother that he didn’t want her to have any money if something happened to him and had canceled the policy,

A judge hasn’t granted Holman a pre-trial release; thus, he will remain in custody.
