Officials in Miami are taking steps to try to put a halt to “spring break” in the city.
The tough new rules are being implemented this year after many years of unruly behaviors and violent acts.
In 2023, spring break in Miami resulted in the fatal shootings of two people and 488 apprehensions. Additionally, over 100 firearms were seized.
However, now, measures will be put into action all during the month of March to break up the chaos.
From Thursdays to Sundays, the following guidelines will be in effect:
There will be a $30 fee to park at a city parking garage or surface lot in the Entertainment District. There will be a $100 flat parking rate on two of the busiest weekends in March.
A non-resident towing fee will be set at $516 for cars that are towed in South Beach, as well.
Additionally, the entrances to beaches will shut down at 6 pm, and bag checks will be conducted to ensure banned items such as alcohol aren’t brought into those areas.
Then, license plate readers will be installed on the eastbound lanes of the MacArthur and Julia Tuttle causeways on March 8-10 and March 15-17, beginning at 6pm.
A DUI sobriety checkpoint will also be set up on the 400 block of 5 Street.
As expected, there will also be more of a presence from law enforcement agencies, including the Miami Beach Police, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Florida Highway Patrol, Miami-Dade Schools Police Department, and more.
