Over $6 Million Settlement Reached In 17 Month Old Semaj Crosby’s Death

Finally, after five long years a settlement has been reached with the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) contractor involving the death of 17-month-old Semaj Crosby.

Crosby was found dead stuffed under a couch in 2017.

Although, no one was ever charged with her death, a civil lawsuit was filed and a settlement of $6.5 million has been reached.

According to reports, a Children’s Home and Aid caseworker visited the home and observed bedbugs, roaches, and vermin but failed to report the living conditions.

A DCFS intern visited the home a day after that meeting and Crosby was reported missing later that day by her family.

The next day authorities went back to the residence and searched the home. There they found Crosby deceased and stuffed under a couch.

Crosby’s death was ruled a homicide by smothering.

Before officers could finish the investigation the house was lit on fire and all evidence was destroyed.

It was said that DCFS visited the home at least 41 times within the past eight months leading up to her death.

The settlement money will go to Crosby’s four siblings and her father, who was incarcerated at the time of the toddler’s death.
