On August 7, 2023, Mesquite ISD officials arrested a student for bringing a handgun to school on the first day.
17 year old Demarea Smith was arrested at John Horn High School after administrators found a gun while enforcing the clear backpack policy.
It was said they saw him trying to hide the weapon while arguing with about the policy. They then called the student resource officer who had a K9 sniff out a firearm.
When authorities searched the bag they found a Ruger 9mm that had been reported stolen.
Smith was arrested and charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon in a prohibited place.
