Authorities in Dallas have apprehended a suspect in relation to the fatal shooting of a man in Uptown Dallas last week.

45-year-old Corey Antwon Thompson was taken into custody on Tuesday in West Dallas, six days following 46-year-old Army Veteran Roderick Butler being shot and killed.

Thompson was placed in the Dallas County Jail and has been charged with murder.

Police haven’t released any details about a possible motive.

The shooting happened outside of a Wells Fargo bank branch, close to 5 p.m., on Tuesday, Dec. 20. Video recordings from the scene show the suspect approaching Butler and shooting him the face with a rifle.

Arrest documents show that a woman had accused Thompson of attempting to rob her and her friend on Dec. 16. She stated that the suspect had the same surgical mask, hooded sweatshirt, and blue jacket as the man seen in the Uptown shooting recording.

That man left the location in a white Lincoln.

Also, on Nov. 13, 2023, Thompson had contacted authorities, saying someone was trying to kill him. Police body cam from an officer who responded depicted Thompson wearing the same clothes that the suspect wore on Dec. 20,2023. Thompson was also observed driving a white Lincoln SUV with paper plates during that incident.

Workers in the vicinity had recognized Butler as someone who always hung around the area, either walking or sitting on a bench with his bags.

Relatives of Butler’s stated that he had some problems with his mental health but had never hurt anyone. He had been homeless but had just moved into an apartment in Dallas.
