An 18 year old woman from New Mexico is facing charges after dumping her newborn baby in a dumpster.
Michael Green, Hector Jasso, and April Nuttall were dumpster diving on Friday when they heard what they thought was a dog or kitten. After investigating, they found that the sound was coming from a trash bag inside the dumpster.
Jasso retrieved the trash bag and discovered inside a baby wrapped in a dirty blanket. Nuttal immediately tended to the baby boy and tried to keep him warm while Green called 911.
Paramedics took over and the baby was eventually careflighted to Lubbock, Tx for better medical attention. Miraculously the baby survived and is in stable condition. Authorities estimated the child had been in the dumpster for about six hours.
Surveillance video from a nearby store was used to identify Alexis Avila, 18. The footage shows Avila driving to the dumpster and tossing a plastic bag in it before driving off.
Authorities later arrested Avila, who eventually admitted to giving birth at her home and then driving to that location to leave the baby in the dumpster.
Avila said she was not aware that she was pregnant until Jan. 6 when she received medical attention for abdominal pain. The following day she unexpectedly gave birth in the bathroom of her home. Avila says she panicked and didn’t know what to do. She then drove around until she decided to dump the baby near a shopping area.
Search warrants were conducted on Avila’s car and her family’s home turned up blood evidence. She was charged with attempted first-degree murder or in the alternative felony child abuse. Prosecutors said the charge will be determined during an upcoming preliminary hearing.
