76 Year Old Woman Accused Of Fatally Shooting Terminally Ill Husband Inside Hospital Gets No Bond

On Saturday, a woman shot and killed her dying husband inside of a Florida hospital. She then barricaded herself inside of his room for four hours prior to coming out.

Daytona Beach officials noted that 76-year-old Ellen Gilland told them that her 77-year-old husband, Jerry Gilland, had been sick for a while. She also told them that the two had orchestrated the shooting together, police say.

“Apparently because he was terminally ill, they had a conversation about it. They actually planned this approximately three weeks ago, that if he continued to take a turn for the worst, he wanted her to end this. Apparently the goal was for him to do it, but he didn’t have the strength. So, she had to carry it out for him,” stated the Daytona Beach police chief.

Subsequent to shooting her husband at about 11:30 a.m., she wouldn’t come out until close to 3:30 p.m. This was after negotiating with police. Ellen Gilland didn’t cause injury to herself nor anyone else. A section of the hospital had to be evacuated and some physicians, nurses, and others hid in rooms and closets.

No charges against Ellen Gilland were immediately noted. However, she could face first-degree murder charges.
